The Northern Restaurant began as a Fish & Chip shop sometime in the early 1920’s by a Mr and Mrs Filippo Iannetta, who at the end of the decade (1928/29) had in their employment a young man “Michele Miele”. Michele worked between their other business outlets in Elgin and Nairn – all of these businesses were later sold on and the Forres branch was taken over sometime between 1929 and 1930 by Michele Miele.
Even in it’s early days The Northern was well known for its high quality Fish & Chips as well as the Italian Ice-Cream. Unfortunately, during the war years, the ice-cream was discontinued due to the rationing of sugar, but production recommenced in the late 1940’s.
Miele’s ice cream was sold all around the local countryside from an ice-cream van operated by family members until 1977 when it was decided to concentrate sales on the main outlet – The Northern. The Northern was run by Michele Miele and his family from 1929/30.
In 1970 Michele retired and the business was taken over as a partnership between two of his sons, Alex and Vince, who along with their wives, Agnese and Maria, respectively carried on the business in the traditional manner. In 1980 the premises were completely renovated to the high standard to which it still maintains. The business was then taken over by Carlo Miele, the present owner, in September 1997, which now makes The Northern pass into the third generation of the Miele family.
Carlo has been brought up in the business, and started by working in the Ice-Cream van in 1976. Carlo took a change in employment between ’77 and ’84, and then returned to The Northern as Manager until 1987. Subsequently, Carlo took over as owner of The Crescent Chip Bar – another of Alex and Vince’s businesses. Then, in 1997, Carlo moved on to The Northern and continues to run and develop the business.
During his time in The Northern Carlo has continued to expand on the range of ice-cream previously offered by Alex and Vince. The range now includes Ice Cream Cakes for all occasions, using natural fruit pulp to make the flavours.
